PostSubject: Looks like it's a write off.....what's next? Advice!   Mon Mar 07, 2011 5:16 am

Hey all,

Got a letter through today saying they'll prob write the old truck off Sad gutted. The reports going to the 3rd party but apparently repairs will be over 66% of value so repair option is looking very unlikely. Therefore it's probably gona be a total loss Sad

I'm toying with buying it back. The only damage is a dented rear door which affects neither the driving or structure (as far as I know) so I'm guessing they'll list it as a cat D or C at worst....sound right? If I buy it back I don't plan on selling as whole idea of buying it was to run it til it dies.

Does anyone know the implications if I buy it back? Do I have to go through new or tougher MOT?? Do I have to repair the damage if it isnt structural?? Will it affect my insurance premium if declare as total loss?

Only thing that's on my mind is that, looking over the car today, I saw daylight where I really shouldn't be able to see daylight!! Its only the arch rusted through and can only see it when you remove a door card but is this major major?? The chasis fine but will this fail an MOT?? If it needs welding it's a lot less viable to buy it back!!

Been looking at other fourtrak's but no half decent ones anywhere near me for under 2k (which I reckon is all they'll give me at a push). Other options a landy but not gona get much for 2k and, although I love um, they're so heavy to drive I just dont know whether I wana go down that option.

Any advice appreciated Smile

buy it back there peanuts
all u need to do is re-mot it no harder just a std test
as for rusty door i wouldn't say thats a fail as its not structural (dont quote me on that tho)
as for a buy back price when they wrote my disco off they paid out 1600 (even with the 10k worth of extras and valued at 6k Rolling Eyes) AFTER trying to denigh me salvage rights (good job i stressed the fact when taking out the policy i would want salvage rights if this happened and it was stated on my policy)i paid 300 to get it back HTH I love you

Hmm sounds like a plan. It isn't the door that's rusty mind, it's the arches. Dont know whether the door is mind. Think I'll ring insurance company tomorrow but they probably wont tell me anything.

Don't know about salvage rights either....will look at policy but didnt specifically ask for this. What does that mean? Do I still get first refusal of the car?

If I only have to repair the rear door to get it through MOT and they give me a good payout/ buy back then I'll probably buy it back and use the spare money to get the welding done. Such a good little runner and was majorly impressed with its off roading abilities last weekend so dont wana just give up on him!

Whats HTH????? Haha!

lol

HTH = Hope This Helps

i cant comment on if u will or will not have first refusal as its the only experience i have had with a write off i just remembered readin on a forum somewhere to specify it when taking out a policy on a highly modified vehicle as they might want to hold on to it and sell it for more which appears to be what they tried with me as i said there was approx 10k on my disco not including the vehicle (the wheels and tyres were worth more then the pay out they paid me Rolling Eyes)

I got mine written off last year Crying or Very sad
I bought it back from the insurance co. They told me the "going rate" was 20% of the claim value.
You do have the right to buy it back Laughing
Once back in your posession, you dont need to re mot it either, although it will be a catogary D I think write off. That's logged with VOSA or the DVLA and can stay that way.
IF you want to remove the write off record, then you need to have the truck tested to make sure the repairs have been done properly and the truck is not a ringer, but that costs so I haven't bothered pirat

I've no idea how all this works, however, i'm sure my old boss had to take his car to the ministry to check the repairs.
I've no idea why.
If I was you, i'd check everything before you go any further.
You don't want to get stung by red tape after you've bought it back.
If I remember correctly, you do need a new M.O.T. because its been written off. Could be wrong, but i'm sure its the case because it has to be proved as road worthy again.

Usualy body rust is ok as long as there's no sharp edges, my old hilux was full of rust holes, and I patched them up with fiberglass coz I couldn't be assed to weld them, duck tape will do the job aswell I think, so long as the holes covered it doesn't matter what with, as long as its not load bearing or chassis related.

makeitfit: did you not have to do a re-MOT at all? Or is it just as a cat d - which I know means basically, cosmetic repairs?

Pitbull: what cat was yours?

Foxy: yea, ta. Trying to get as much info as I can now as, like you say, dont want to buy it back and then be fubared! Realistically I need to look into how easily it'd go through an MOT in case I have to do one. Might look into doing one of those health check/ practice MOT thingys. And need to get that rust area checked.

hawkins: Ah ok, thats interesting. You cant even see the rust as its under the rear panel basically and doesnt extend to anything in the external bodywork. I only spotted it as I'd removed some of the interior trim so maybe i'll be ok!

mine was cat D but to be honnest i cant see how u wouldnt need to re-mot a vehicle that has been written off as u need to prove that it is still road legal but cant really comment on it any further then what i was told

p.s. also dont a hpi check on mine about 6months after and it didnt show the write off on it dont know why ???

Category D - Repairable salvage. Minimal damage, probably not structural, but insurer does not want to repair, even though it might be economic to do so... Does not need VIC inspection to return to road. Cat D is easily repairable, possibly not needing repair if you can live with dents and scratches such as if it had been stolen and recovered. you might have to get a engineers report if your going to keep it insured with same company .. otherwise if u can buy it back and make money on it .. or buy it back and get the rust parts welded up & engineers report ..RAC do reports weigh it up find out costs then see if it worth keeping .. hope that makes sense

foxy: will do, cheers

bazdisco: you gota fourtrak?? Thought I was the only one lol. And mud tyres or road tyres? Razz

Pitbull: hmm ok, think I'll just have to see what they say. Surely it should show up on the hpi but maybe you're just lucky!!

Nilo: very useful!!!!! Where did you copy/ paste that from? Razz Cheers mind! I can definately live with the dent so if it's not structural and doesnt need repairing then I wont bother. Door still opens and works fine and can barely even see the dent as its behind the spare wheel! And Ive got RAC cover too so will look into how much their inspection things you mention cost. Could be a very good idea. Cheers dude!

Well I didn't need to re mot mine till the usual date. I bought it back from the insurance company and the policy too remained till renewal time with the same company.
I repaired it myself and when the mot came round it was just as usual.
A "write off" is just a financial state, value of truck vs value of repairs for cat d or c. Cat b I think needs VIC test and cat A is total scrap crush no spares etc.
Just ring Swansea if in any doubt they'll tell you for the cost of the phone call Very Happy

foxy: you're on the ball today with the jokes! Razz

pitbull: no it's definately a good thing!! Buying it back might make me a few pennies but at the very least it'll be a few days before i'm on the road and at the worst it'll be undriveable til i get a new door, fit a new door and get an mot......i have a horse to see twice a day and even 1 day without a car would majorly screw me up!!!! The money just isn't worth the hassle it'll cause me so as long as it's fixed I'm happy! Smile
