| This is an email Ive just received from a GLASS rep regarding the Gap.. Confirms its now closed ........ All, Just to comfirm Powys CC have now officially removed the 6mth TRO closure on The Gap road at Brecon and put up better defined 'no vehicle' signs. Naturally as a restricted byway (RB) all vehicle rights have been extinguished and the route is not legal to drive anymore (some may say it was a grey one before, even though some drivers had 5yrs of usage proof etc). Thanks John Askew GLASS & TL Area Rep | |

| it,s all very well closing them, how about some action to get em re-opened. we are all very good at being told, "you can't drive down there now boys it's been closed" (me included) but not very good at turning up at meetings and throwing our weight behind the resons to keep it open, if this and other "boat"s are legal and ancient byways then the decision to close them must be illegal, I wonder what an access lawyer would make of it? I know we as a club are too small to rattle the council's chains but if we got on to GLASS or CRAG, I,m sure we could get some questions asked (especially if we were more than one club, us, yoc, wye & welsh, gorc) etc. I think all the clubs in south wales should have some interclub meetings and then get involved with other clubs in wales and further afield and demand that these councils listen to our requests and ask them to tell us their justification and rationale for closing these lanes and if the bodies like glass and crag have a legal department then I think it is time they used them for the benifits of their members. any thoughts from other members welcomed. | |

| i live local to the gap road and there is still alot of traffic moving over there. There have been new signs put up, no writing on them just pictures. but the restricted acsess signs are still in place to say that the road is open for two seasons of the year. i have been over the gap many times collecting sheep ect baaaaaa... and over the last TRO there has been alot of effort put into repairing the road and to be honest you could drive a awd car over there. all the steps have gone on the gap itself, new stone must have been taken up there because all the holes have been filled in and all of the trenches have been sorted out so none of the road is water logged. the blown bridge however is still quite poor but not half as bad as it used to be.
it does make you wonder why after putting all that effort into repairing it they close it off?? i mean its took years of traffic and weather errosion to put it in the state it was, its not as if it would be trashed again in a few months.
does any body know if the Dolygear to Talybont road is open? there is still quite abit of traffic moving over there aswell and that is in hell of a mess.

The time for action was back in Nov 2007 when the NERC act was brought in. You had to (and i did) provide proof of use for the last 15 years for a given vehicular right of way for it to be excempt from the NERC act. Thats why the Gap has stayed open for so long as it been in dispute, but BBNP have finally got their way. Shame really as we've lost some stunning byways. Once a byway is downgraded, knowing councils, it will never be upgraded. | |
