Hey all, wondering whether anybody may be able to help me and my brother diagnose a fault on his Range Rover as we're not overly familiar with them.

He has a 1996 2.5 diesel (BMW) with a manual box on about 171k. Mostly in first when accelerating hard or going up hills it clunks 7 or 8 times quickly from what feels like the front. The only way I can describe it is like if the splines on a driveshaft were slipping or something, it's that kind of mechanical slipping/clunking? I have read somewhere about the transfer box having a chain inside which can stretch and cause problems? It doesn't seem to have this problem if you accelerate slowly or on flat ground so almost as if something has an issue when under harsher load?

Has anyone come across anything like this before?

as it happens i have the same problem at the moment, to eliminate it being the diffs take one propshaft off put it in difflock high and drive it, if no diffrent try again with the other propshaft off, if you still have the problem then it is 99% the transfer box, hope this helps.

Cheers for that I shall pass the info on!

Are the transfer boxes a common problem?
